Donations to the Foundation Are Now Tax-Deductible

We were all at my house. My sister and her family, my brother, my cousin Nick and his. We had gathered to remember my dad, two years on, the way you do. To be in the same room and feel a little less alone about it.

Nick is my dad’s godson. He worked beside him for years, and he does my dad’s job at the family business now. If anyone in that room carried the weight of the day the way we did, it was him.

Partway through the afternoon my wife went out for the mail. Ordinary errand. She came back in with the usual stack, and somewhere in the middle of it was an envelope from the IRS.

Inside was our determination letter. The Joseph P. Niccoli, Sr. Foundation, Inc. was officially a recognized 501(c)(3) public charity. It landed in our hands on the day we had set aside to remember him.

So here it is, officially. Donations to the foundation are now tax-deductible to the full extent permitted by law.

For anyone who gives, it means your donation goes further. Every contribution, whether toward the Annual Joe Niccoli Invitational, a future grant, or the general fund, can be deducted from your federal taxes, and we’ll provide written acknowledgment for every gift. For the foundation, it means we can do more. Grants, sponsorships, and programs all get easier when people know their generosity is recognized. It opens doors.

The tax piece was never the point. The point was, and still is, finding people close to home who need a hand and showing up for them. But we’re glad it’s easier now for people to be part of that.

One last thing.

Every nonprofit is assigned a federal tax ID number. Nine digits, handed out by the government, no meaning to anyone. Ours is 41-5055181. Right after the dash: 5055.

When I was a boy and I wanted my dad, I didn’t call the business line. I called the private one, the one he picked up with a plain “hello.” The last four digits were 5055. I dialed that number my whole life.

Now it sits in the middle of the foundation’s ID, printed on a federal document, permanent. I don’t know what to call that. I’m not sure I need to.
